Classical Greece is said to be the start of Western Civilization. From language to art, theater to geometry, the Greeks left a lasting legacy. Students from eight school districts across Oswego County came together to test their knowledge of “Greek life.” Students were tested on their knowledge of Greek history and mythology in a series of six quizzes, memorized and recited a poem from the Iliad or the Odyssey.

In addition, the student teams created a ‘modern’ god or goddess to reflect the modern era, while keeping to the Greek tradition of helping to explain one of the big questions in society. They created a poster of their god/goddess, wrote a children’s book about him or her and performed a skit to illustrate their principal belief on why or how this god/goddess came about.

In the end, of the ‘all Greek to me’ competition saw the top three teams earn medals. In first place, the team from Mexico, coached by Shannon Bigelow earned the gold medal; the team from Oswego High School, coached by Kaylea Morse took second and the silver medal; while the team from Fulton’s G. Ray Bodley High School, coached by Jamie Ruzekowicz went home with third place and the bronze medal.

OCAY League is coordinated through the Center for Instruction, Technology & Innovation’s Arts-in-Education Gifted and Talented program.

The team from Sandy Creek included members: Caleigh Rosenbaum, Margery Yousey, Emily Kehoe, Madison Brown, Emily Smith, Nic Potter, Kennedy Sullivan and Sydney Cook. The team is coached by Caitlin White.
